PRINCIPLES TO LIVE BY: If you feel like you want to make a point make it to yourself first.

How many times have you felt like doing something just because the majority of people does it? How many times have you gone somewhere or pretended to like something just because a certain group of people (you’re interested in impressing) thinks it’s cool? How many times have you acted fake just because you thought it was your only way to happiness?

I was once blinded by the tears and frustration caused by my depression when I came across this quote by Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj, an Indian spiritual teacher and philosopher : “It is always the false that makes you suffer, the false desires and fears, the false values and ideas, the false relationships between people. Abandon the false and you are free of pain; truth makes happy, truth liberates.” Right at that moment I felt stupid for ever believing I would get away with pretending to be someone else. I realized that if you want to make a point to someone it will only go through to them if you feel it with all your heart. Play-acting is as exhausting as giving blood.

Unhappy “party people” show their boredom by the way they sip their wine. Extremely fashionable people who dress only to impress show their discomfort by the way they carry themselves. Do not be fooled into thinking that the hidden messages your thoughts create do not get transmitted to other people. If you’re confident in your own skin, if you’re happy with your choice of restaurant, if you’re really pleased with the acceptance of a party invitation and if you’re content with the number and quality of people that surround you – it will show. Therefore, if you want to make the point that you are happy, BE happy. If you want to make the point that you are confident. BE confident. If you want to make the point that life is amazing, LIVE IT.

If you ever find yourself obsessed with wanting to redefine YOU in order to become acceptable to others take a moment to sit and think carefully. If it means having to perform like a Grammy Award winning actor then the very second you attempt to change your habits and opinions for the sake of others you lose the game. You lose your identity, i.e. all that you will ever have!

Love and marvel,

E.
